En tal sentido Jazmín Chacón, coordinadora del Departamento de Educación del Centro Penitenciario de Oriente (CPO) o cárcel de “La Pica”, aseguró que al menos 500 de los 2.100 internos que alberga este recinto carcelario, forman parte de los programas educativos, culturales y deportivos que se ofrecen en el lugar.
“La población penal del Internado Judicial del estado Monagas, se ha concentrado en capacitarse y crecer personalmente en el tiempo de estadía en este recinto. Cada vez son más los confinados que se integran a las distintas actividades útiles del penal”.
Indicó que actualmente imparten clases educativas en todos los renglones a través de las Misiones Robinsón, Ribas y Sucre, además de las carreras profesionales que brinda la Universidad Nacional Abierta (UNA).
“Es importante resaltar que en los mejores rendimientos académicos a nivel penitenciario en la UNA, son los penados de este centro de reclusión quienes llevan la batuta”, subrayó.
Por su parte Freddy Rosales, trabajador social de la Gobernación Bolivariana del estado Monagas, señaló que los reclusos están involucrándose en todas las actividades y programas socio productivos, educativos y culturales de manera muy satisfactoria.
Equipos Deportivos
Entre tanto Juan Miranda, ex recluso y ahora colaborador en el desarrollo del área atlética del penal, manifestó que cuentan con tres equipos deportivos, uno de boxeo, uno de fútbol y otro de básquet en el que al menos participan 80 encarcelados que buscan apartarse del ocio y dar frutos de un cambio de conducta dentro y fuera del centro carcelario.
Humberto Salazar, entrenador del equipo de boxeo, informó que cuentan con 9 jóvenes que día a día practican esta disciplina deportiva en la que recientemente le ganaron ocho de nueve cuadrantes al equipo del Polideportivo de Maturín.
“Tenemos pendiente una importante competencia en la ciudad de Caracas y sólo estamos esperando por la aprobación de los permisos pertinentes de parte de las autoridades”, destacó.
El interno Amílcar Hernández, aseguró que todos los integrantes de los equipos de fútbol y boxeo se unieron para ambientar los espacios deportivos, no sólo para mejorar las condiciones físicas al momento de entrenar o jugar, sino que además, les brindan una mejor vista a los visitantes.

En el anexo femenino de esta prisión, las internas también se integran a los programas de formación, en especial a los culturales relacionados con la práctica de danzas.
